Fraternal Order of Eagles: More Than a Century of "Good Things"
There was no fanfare when the Fraternal Order of Eagles was founded on February 6, 1898. The organization was formed by
six theater owners sitting on a pile of lumber in Moran's shipyard in Seattle. They were competitors who had come together
to discuss a musicians strike. After deciding how to handle the strike, they agreed to "bury the hatchet" and form an organization
dubbed, "The Order of Good Things."
Early meetings were held on local theater stages and after taking care of business, attendees rolled out a keg of beer
and enjoyed social time. As numbers grew, participants selected the Bald Eagle as the official emblem and changed the name
to "The Fraternal Order of Eagles." In April, 1898, the membership formed a Grand Aerie, secured a charter and developed a
constitution and by-laws, with John Cort elected the Eagles' first president.
Unparalleled Growth
Touring theater troupes are credited with much of the Eagles' rapid growth. Most early members were actors, stagehands
and playwrights who as they toured, carried the Eagles story across the United States and Canada.
The Eagles' popularity grew because their concept of brotherhood was so unique. The organization's success is also attributed
to its sick and funeral benefits (no Eagle was ever buried in a Potter's Field), the provision of an aerie physician and many
other benefits.
Responsibility to Its Members
As the Eagles grew, so did the organization's responsibilities to its members. Frank Hering, recognized as the "father"
of Mother's Day, took the by-laws and customized them for the Eagles. He and other early members led the organization through
difficult days at the turn of the century and built the solid foundation upon which the Eagles still rest.
Over the years, the Eagles have continued to meet member needs by fighting and winning many battles, with the results a
Workman's Compensation Act, Mother's Day, old age pensions, Social Security laws and "Jobs After 40." The Eagles are still
fighting to liberalize social benefits while battling life-threatening diseases through their sponsorships.
People Helping People
The Eagles claim many great social and political leaders on their rolls — from Theodore Roosevelt to Ronald Reagan.
Harry S. Truman often reiterated that the Eagles was his type of organization — funded by and for the common man.
Today, the Eagles continue to strive to make the world a better place. We are proud, caring "people helping people" who
understand that the needs of many will always outweigh the needs of a few.
Kay Nelson - Secretary and Membership Director
Membership - Membership- Membership.
Our theme this year is all about net gain which means we retain our members presently and gain one member. So far
we have 2 new members but have dropped 6 members for various reasons so we have some ground to make up. Now is the time
to think about giving that gift of membership with the holiday coming. If you once belonged you don't have to go through
initiation again. Contact me for more information. Also thanks to all who helped with the Little Brother/Sister
program. This is what it's all about. Being involved in our community and their causes.
This is the lifeblood of our auxiliary but not the most important part. The most important part is particiapation - whether
it is in attendance or assistance. Your help is needed with donations to our fundraisers, helping with fundraisers or just
participating by coming and being an intergral part of the people attending them.
Send your dues when I send the first reminder (or before you even get that) to save on postage. You expiration date is
on your official receipt.
Fraternally Kay Nelson – Secretary/Membership Chairman
Don’t forget, membership is the life blood of our auxiliary, so keep those members coming.
HAVE YOU NOTICED...
Some members keep the organization strong
while others join just to belong
Some dig right in...some serve with pride
Some go along just for the ride
Some volunteer to do their share
While others lie back and just don’t care
On meeting days some always show
While there are those who never go
Some always pay their dues ahead
Some get behind four months instead
Some do their best.. some build.. some make
Some lag behind.. some let things go
Some drag..some pull..some don’t...some do
Consider...which of these are you?
What are the benefits to belonging to your Aerie and Auxiliary?
Feeling like family. Having friends no matter what state or town you are in - if there is an
Eagle club there you can go in and be welcomed.
The Auxiliary has a death benefit payable to your family. Right now it is $200.
The Aerie and Auxiliary have the foundation where if you are killed or die while at your job, your family has free dental,
medical and college for your children. Now where can you get that kind of insurance for the cost of your dues every
year? Contact your membership chairman to find out more.
Last, but not least, you and your dues are important in our fight against Cancer, Heart disease,
Kidney disease, Diabetes and Alzheimers just to name a few. You can feel good about the money that is raised and given
to these worthwhile charities. And remember that the Eagles donations go 100% for research and not for administrative
costs or we don't give. We check on those charities all the time to be sure our standards are kept. We
are the BEST KEPT SECRET IN TOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!

"MY PRICELESS
POSSESSION"
“I hold in my hand a little scrap of paper, 1 1/2 X 3 1/2 inches in size, It is of no intrinsic worth,
not a bond, not a check or receipt for valuables, yet it is my priceless possession. It is my membership card in the
Fraternal Order of Eagles. It tells me that I have entered into a spiritual kinship with my Brother/Sister Eagles to
practice charity in word and deed: to forgive and forget the faults of my Sisters, to hush the tongues of scandal and innuendo,
to care for the crippled, the hungry, and the sick, and to be fair and just to all. It tells me that no matter where
I may travel in this country, I am welcome to visit a place where good fellowship prevails among Eagles and friends.
It tells me that my name will be guarded loyally at all times, and the no one will ever purposely do anything, by word or
act, to make me unhappy, and that neither will I. It tells me that I have promised to try fervently to make my home
the abode of clean thoughts and wholesome living, that I shall serve God and keep His commandments. It tells me that
I am entitled, with every other member to share the benefits and privileges and responsibilities of this order. And
finally, it tells me that when the final exit from the stage of life has been made, there will be gathered around my body,
friends and Sisters who will recall my mind by virtues, though they be few, and will forget my faults, though they be many.
It tells me that and a great deal more. This little card makes me proud, yet humble, that I van possess this passport
into a society of friends and Sisters that are numbered in the thousands."
